How do you tell a false prophecy/prophet or a true prophet?

Can anyone tell me please how do you tell what is a true prophecy/prophet and what is a false prophecy/prophet?

I used to think that it had to be that they had to come true 100% of the time and it not be conditional(eg:the prophet saying you had to believe and you didnt believe enough and thats why it didn't come true or you didnt do enough etc) but then i asked a lady who says shes a prophet and this is what she said

';Remember the story of the widow who only had oil and meal enough to make one cake for herself and her son. After that she planned to die. The man of God gave her the word to make him a cake first. She was supplied during the whole famine. If she had not obeyed it would not have been God's fault if she died after the last cake. Then you can look at the story of Jonah. The Lord sent him to Ninevah, but he disobeyed. God finally got him to go. When he arrived, he gave the word of the Lord that they would perish because of their sins. They repented. If they had not repented, they would have died just as God had said. Prophecy is conditional to a point, but it should be accurate as well. You just keep studying the word and working with those you know. I wish you the best.';

So if thats true thats its not always 100% accurate/conditional on what you do/cant do etc then cant everyone claiming to be a prophet use these reasons/way out clauses for why something didnt happen?

How can there then be accountability/any way to discern if someone is a true prophet or not or is there no way?

Id appreciate your help

maryHow do you tell a false prophecy/prophet or a true prophet?
Pray about it....How do you tell a false prophecy/prophet or a true prophet?
That is one of the problems in religions and beliefs. If you have no way of verifying something then you have no way of determining whether it is correct or not. Prophets, true or false, can always say that their prophecy hasn't come true yet or that it only comes true for those who believe.

Yes, anyone can claim all sorts of silly stuff. But there is no accountability in beliefs or prophecy.
Your confusing obedience with prophecy. Prophecy is when a prophet says something will come to pass. Not tells you to do something. Even though a prophet can tell you to do something. To know if a prophet is a prophet of God. What the prophet says must come to pass.
There is not now and never has been such a thing as a ''true'' prophet.

There have been many people claiming to be prophets (or should that be profits?) who make a lot of money out of speaking in such a charismatic and engaging manner that the more gullible people believe them.
people are confused about what a prophet is.

The testimony of Jesus Christ is the spirit of prophecy, seers, revelators, or predictors aren't always prophets.

A true prophet wil speak of Jesus Christ as his topic.
A true prophet will have 100% accuracy in all their prophecies.

A false prophet, even at 99% accuracy is still a false prophet.
there are no prophet today in time past god spoke to with prophet but in these last days he has spoken through his son jesus.hope this helps read heb.
Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

Matthew 7:16
You shall know them by their fruits!
By his fruits
I can give you the Jewish view:

If the prophet speaks in the name of the Lord and the oracle does not come true, that oracle was not spoken by the Lord. (Deut. 18:22)

The Torah clearly states: if a prophet makes prophecies that do not come true, then they are not one of G-d鈥檚 prophets. It doesn鈥檛 matter how many miracles they do. It doesn鈥檛 matter how many nice things they say, or how many good teachings they have. It doesn鈥檛 matter if they feed the starving and heal the sick. The Torah makes it crystal clear: if a prophet speaks in the Name of the L-rd, and it does not come true, then it is not from the L-rd.
Matthew 5 .17-20

If you research the Bible as Jesus calls us to, you will be able to know when someone is twisting Jesus words. If you have some specific teachings that you want to question, email me. I will give you 100% bible reason and not what ever I like.

Know the Bible so you may recognize false-prophets. But even better, know Jesus like you know yourself and you will never be tricked or mislead!

God Bless!
Prophecy can not exist without free will. Prophecy also cannot account for free will when prophets have their ';visions'; or moments of clarity, whatever form they may take. So, by the very laws of nature, prophecy can't truly exist, because no one can predict what millions or even one person will do in a given situation, and no one can truly measure how our free will and the choices we make within the rights of free will change the world around us, and make certain prophetic events impossible, obsolete, or possibly more likely than without our decisions.

My conclusion, prophets are con artists and there is no such thing as a true, viable prophecy.
A prophet not only prophesies, but also may interpret prophecy, and yes it is 100%, for if not it is not prophecy, and a prophet would not speak on it in prophesy.

A prophet most have seen are prophets of convenience, not prophets of God. The prophet of God is only concerned with the word of God to pass, or to bring the word of God. A prophet is every man, but a prophet of God when he speak in God's room that is all he is only concern.

To stand before God is to stand in the Spirit of God in the room of God, before God, you know and every person in the direct area share in the experience, but all may not understand but they can relate the experience Only the prophets know the heart of the prophets, that can not always be expressed even though you may try. That's why you can or should only express God or the things of God with the children of God (the prophets)
Remember - for a person to say ';The Lord says';. If the thing is not from the Lord, but the person is claiming it is then the person according to God's word is pronouncing a death sentence on him/her self. God will judge and deal with them Himself in executing His sentence.

Despite God's warning there have been many false prophets And the Bible is clear that some false prophets will be 100% accurate only saying let us worship other gods. The sure test is ';To the Law and to the testimony if they speak not according to this word, there is no light in them.'; Isa 8.20

So if you would be safe you must know God's testimony - the Bible and especially His law. The 10 commandments and not the watered down version so popularly published.
A good book that you might like to read is ';Saved By the Light'; by Dannion

Brinkley or ';Embraced by the Light'; by Betty Eadie...they were given views of the future, but were told if you pray, the future can change.

They found that the prophecies did come true, but to a lesser extent when prayed for.
Pray. The most repeated admonition in the Bible is to ask.. to seek. ';If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.'; (James 1:5-6). To upbraid means to hold back. If you pray in faith that you will recieve an answer, and if you are completely willing to follow that answer, then you will be told how to act by the Holy Ghost.

';But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right. But if it be not right you shall have no such feelings, but you shall have a stupor of thought...'; (D%26amp;C 9:9)

';Yea, behold, I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart. Now, behold, this is the spirit of revelation; behold, this is the spirit by which Moses brought the children of Israel through the Red Sea on dry ground. Therefore, this is thy gift; apply unto it, and blessed art thou, for it shall deliver you out of the hands of your enemies, when, if it were not so, they would slay you and bring your soul to destruction.'; (D%26amp;C 8:2-4)

Be careful. Do not follow someone based on the excitement of their sermons. At home, where there is no charismatic speaker, no uplifting music, just you in a quiet and peaceful room, pray to know if it is true. If peace comes, then it is right and of God. If no peace comes, keep looking.

';Though we are sent to a failing world, we are not sent to fail.'; (I do not remember who said that.) We are not supposed to just pick someone and follow them blindly. Yes, we need to have faith, but if we just had faith in everyone, we would get nowhere. We need guidance, a testimony for ourselves to know whom to follow; who is right; who is trying to decieve us; who is decieved themselves. Pray.

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I know entirely that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and that the Bible and the Book of Mormon are testimonies of Him. We are told to pray about the gospel. That is my testimony. But you cannot just believe what I say, or what someone else says, you need one for yourself.

The best way to get one is to pray. Don't follow me or that woman just because of what we say. Pray about it, and I promise that you will get an answer from your Heavenly Father. I know that He loves us, and wants us to know the truth. He will not leave you alone.
2 Peter 2:1

But there were also lying prophets among the people then, just as there will be lying religious teachers among you. They'll smuggle in destructive divisions, pitting you against each other鈥攂iting the hand of the One who gave them a chance to have their lives back! They've put themselves on a fast downhill slide to destruction, but not before they recruit a crowd of mixed-up followers who can't tell right from wrong.
According to the Bible a true prophet who speaks for God.:

1. Makes detailed, specific, verifiable, predictions that come 100% true, 100% of the time.

2. Even If they pass Test #1 and/or do other signs and wonders, if they then tell you to follow other Gods they are false prophets and fail the test.

A true prophet is 100% accurate and leads people to the God of the Bible, not away from him.

It is difficult to see how New Age Psychics and Mediums, the self-styled prophets of some of the more recent religions, and even some present day ';Christian'; prophets, would qualify as a genuine prophet if held to the Biblical standards of prophecy.

Old Testament Prophets always specified when Their Message Was from God, that way if it didn't come true everyone knew they were a false prophet because neither they or their followers could sweep it under the carpet by claiming they were only expressing a personal opinion. Here are some examples of prophets making clear that what they said next was from God:

Isaiah 1:2 - The Lord has spoken.

Jeremiah 10:1,2 - Hear the word which the Lord speaks. Thus says the Lord...

Ezekiel 1:3 - The word of the Lord came expressly.

Hosea 1:1,2 - The word of the Lord that came ... the Lord began to speak by Hosea, the Lord said...

Jonah 1:1 - The word of the Lord came to Jonah.

Micah 1:1 - The word of the Lord that came to Micah.

Zech. 1:1 - The word of the Lord came to Zechariah.

[See also Joel 1:2; Amos 1:3,6, etc; Obad. 1:1; Zeph. 1:1; Hab. 2:2; Deuteronomy 30:9,10; Numbers 12:6-8; 23:5,12,16,19

A prophet must speak what God says. But God does not lie nor repent. God does not deliberately tell things not true, and God cannot make mistakes because of lack of knowledge since He knows everything. So there cannot be anything untrue in what He reveals.

Deuteronomy 18:18-22 says The test of a prophet is, if he makes a mistake in prophetic utterance, he is not from God.

The Bible makes it very clear how to test whether a prophet is speaking from God or not because many false prophets will try to speak for God:

';When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not come about or come true, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously'; (Deut 18:22).

';If a prophet... arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder comes true, concerning which he spoke to you, saying, ';Let us go after other gods (whom you have not known) and let us serve them [thereby contradicting the ten commandments],' you shall not listen to the words of that prophet ...but that prophet ... shall be put to death'; (Deut 13:1-5).

';Even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, let him be accursed!'; (Gal. 1:6-8).

';if one comes and preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted... (2 Cor. 11:4).

In summary, the Bible states that a false prophet can clearly be exposed if:

1) if his prophecies do not come true 100% of the time that he claims to be delivering a message from God,

2) if his prophecy contradicts a previous revelation or command given by God.

It is very clear that the ';prophets'; of all other religions as well as the ';prophets'; of certain ';Christian'; cults, do not meet the high standard of Biblical criteria:

A true prophet of God cannot utter a single false prophecy, not one! He cannot give out a ';Thus saith the Lord'; and have it not come to pass.

PS

Jonah's mission was to go to Ninevah and preach to them about their wickedness and tell them that if they did not repent they would all be destroyed.

God subsequently relented because of the people's repentance, in accord with the principle he stated in Jeremiah 18:7-10 ';If at some time I announce that a nation or kingdom will be uprooted, torn down and destroyed, and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent and not inflict on it the disaster I had planned. And if at another time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be built up and planted, and if it does evil in my sight and does not obey me, then I will reconsider the good I had intended to do for it';

On that basis Jonah did not deliver a false message and he did not lead the people away from God, quite the opposite in fact!
Hon there are no prophets today. That gift ceased long ago.

1Cr 13:8 Love will last forever, but prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will all disappear.
A true prophet is able to predict 649 numbers, so he's probably a millionaire. A false prophet may claim the same but his wealth comes mostly from stupid people paying him for his advice.
1. Gather a cult following

2. Rant about God a lot

3. ????

4. PROPHET!
Any Joe off the street can be your prophet. Don't be gullible.
just listen and watch, then decide.
ask them if they want CHIKIN
It has to come true, yes, but it also must NEVER contradict the Bible.

So if someone is giving a future prophecy, the two tests are:

1) It must not contradict the Bible, and

2) It has to actually happen with 100% accuracy.

If the person's words fail either of these two tests, then the person is giving you a false prophecy.
For a start, mary k 鈾? read Isaiah 8: 19,20:

And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?

8:20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, [it is] because [there is] no light in them.

You see, Satan has his prophets, too, and they will entice you to sin--they're devils, you know

Shalom, peace in Jesus, Ben Yeshua
