What was the penalty for the false prophecies in the Old Testament?

What kind of excuses God would accept? What was the penalty for the false prophecies in the Old Testament?
Prophets have the highest calling. Look what happened to Moses for claiming the water was from him..1 slip and he loses the gift of the promised land. God does not mess around with those he calls.

God says that you better be very careful if you claim to be a prophet. For those who are listening to you, God says that if you are not 100% accurate then you are not a prophet..God says that if you claim to be a prophet and are not then you are deserving of death. What was the penalty for the false prophecies in the Old Testament?
Dear Nina,

First Kings 18 pretty well describes a reasonable penalty for those who gave false prophecy before Jesus Christ. God does not accept excuses. He does however accept repentance.

Edit:

Usually I give QiA a thumbs up but I couldn't this time. I agree that man is imperfect. However God is Perfect all of the time.

Deuteronomy 18:20 But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.

21And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?

22When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

I don't think God will accept any excuses..If they are a false prophet then they were lying with knowledge...
Why do the nations rage and its people plot in vain

Against Jehovah and his Anointed One?

Jehovah laughs at them for he knows they are vanity

The right hand of the Most High is Holy!

The right hand of Jehovah is held high!

Blessed be Jehovah

from this time forth forevermore!
According to the scriptures it was death.

Note that the poster ';Desert Rose'; who claims to be a Jehovah's Witness points out that the OT laws were done away with by Christ's sacrifice. It is true that Christians are no longer under the law of Moses. But it is also true that Jesus and the NT writers condemned false prophets and warned about them. Thus, false prophets are to be avoided...just not executed.

I find it interesting that Mrs. Rose (who *claims* to be a JW) posted on this thread because her religion (the Watchtower/JWs) has been guilty of numerous false prophecies...perhaps she feels a bit guilty?
From what I understood back in the Old Testament days. One false prophecy meant death. There was no room for mistakes. Either you followed God for real, or you soon died for trying to fake it.
The penalty was death. But for Desert Rose, if the law is abolished, whats the deal with JWs and blood? Why do the JWs teach as commandments the doctrines of men?
i think it was a group thing .. there were several priests that verified and if one was spreading BS it was generally a dismemberment i think ..
We are only imperfect men!
no excuses would be accepted .

not for sure but probley death
They were stoned to death.
